Kat Von D Ladybird Palette Review

I hauled The Ladybird Palette a few weeks ago and I finally photographed it. I have been testing the palette out, trying different color combinations, the blend-ability, staying power, pigmentation. The palette consists of 8 shadows, and are .05 oz. The shadows are the same size as a MAC shadow, and Urban Decay shadows. The shadows are all matte, and are made with Rose extract, jojoba oil, vitamin E, and softening oil. They are also supposed to be long wearing, non-creasing or fading. The palette also comes with a mini brown eyeliner in Immortal Love (.028 oz). The color range of these shadows are mostly neutrals with a few wild cards. I bought this palette to be a more diverse Naked Basics but still giving me natural eye looks.

 Colors
The palette has 8 shadows ranging from very fair shades to some bolder dark ones. This palette has a good color selection for someone with a medium to dark complexion because it does have some more mid-toned shades.

FurElise, Vespertine, Renholder, Siouxsie-sioux, unrequited, harlow, wolf, cleopatra

Fur Elise
A plum, purple color with grey undertone. This can work well in the crease or out-v to darken up a look. The shadow is bendable so it doesn't look too purple or super dark. The shadow is a little dry and feels smooth. You will get tons of fall out around the eyeshadow pan, but little will fall out on to your cheek bones.

Vespertine
A light milky vanilla color, with pink undertones. The shadow is silky smooth and can be blended to almost nothing. This shadow is so close to my skin color, that it is the perfect shade all over the lid to just a barely there finish. If you have darker skin this shadow could be a good brightener in the inner corners, or brow bone because of its pinkness.

Renholder
This is a great gray shade, soft, smooth, and very blend-able. The shade is gray, but it definitely could also be a light taupe brown. This shade works great in the crease, or as a soft liner. This could work as an all over the lid shade in a smokey eye or in the crease.

Siouxsie-sioux
Basic black but the pigmentation is a little on the sheer side. You can build it up to be a rich deep black, but that takes time. The black is more on the grey side so it compliments well with Renholder. The shadows finish is matte with a hint of sparkle.

Unrequited
Light peach beige color. This is the smoothest shadow in the palette. Sometimes a little too smooth. it is a little darker than vespertine so to can be a nice all over lid or subtle crease.

Harlow
Light grey brown, darker than Urban Decays Naked and richer. Basic crease color, could look ashy on dark skin tones.

Wolf
Deep medium brown. Has orange undertones, so use lightly and blend throughly. Good as a shadow liner or in the outer v to darken up a day look to night. the shadow is smooth but does have a little fall out. Just tap your brush on the lid to get rid of the excess.

Cleopatra
Your basic sunset orange, but brown enough to not give your eyes a tired look. This shadow is good for a pop of color and create a gradual gradient between warm browns. This color is pigmented so be careful. It is better to build this color up, that to dry to lighten it with vanilla colored shadows.

Here are the swatches. These shadows don't swatch well with fingers. You will get better color pay off when using brushes. Also the shades are a little out of order.

Harlow, Wölf, Cleopatra

Furelise, Vespertine, renholder

Renholder, Siouxsie-sioux, unrequited

These are nice shadows but don't put your fingers on them it messes them up. Just use brushes to apply. The consistency is so smooth they kind of melt when your hands touch them. The packaging barely gives you any space between the shadows so use small eye brushes.

Also these shadow do really well under a primer. So definitely use a primer and a eyeshadow base like Mac's Painterly Paint pot.

Here are all the shadows swatched with a primer and a base. As you can see the color pay off is more intense. I aslo used a brush instead of my fingers, that makes a big difference. The two lightest color in the palette vespertine, and unrequited are swatched closest to my knuckles but the colors are so similar to my skin tone so it barely shows up.

Final Thoughts
This is a good palette, it has a nice shade range, good pigmentation, and I just like it. It is my new go to neutral eye palette. The packaging is nice and compact very sturdy great for travel.  This palette works nicely on my skin tone, but also could be good for medium tones too. The only thing that I don't like it the consistency of some of the shadows. They are dry but silky at the same time, which causes them to flake off in the pan. Never apply these shadows with your fingers, the color pay off will be horrible. Use good brushes, and blend with a fluffy crease brush. I love the eyeliner that comes with the palette it is smooth and is long wearing. If you already have the Naked Basics Palette then Ladybird would be an excessive purchase. If you are looking for something with a wider color range than the Naked Basics I would definitely pick this little baby up. It retails exclusively at Sephora for 36 dollars. I find myself reaching for this palette, all the time to create really subtle eye looks.

*for some reason my eyeshadow ended up looking kind of muddy/dirty in the photos. But I used Vespertine all over the lid, put harlow in my crease, and lined my upper lash line with Siouxsie-sioux.
